The Wisdom of the Bull Frog: Leadership Made Simple (But Not Easy) Book Review

Reviewed by Melissa Ballard, CFP®

I have such respect for those who serve(d) our country with honor in the armed services. And even more respect for those who rise through the ranks to become leaders of the highest ranking. Additionally, I am always looking for ways to be a better leader—in my home life, in my career and in our community. That said, when I came across Admiral Willian H. McRaven’s, The Wisdom of the Bull Frog: Leadership Made simple (But Not Easy), it was a must-read for me.

Admiral McRaven was given the title of Bull Frog—the longest-serving Navy SEAL on active duty—thirty-four years after going through SEAL training. Throughout his career, in addition to leading the SEALs, he also led Green Berets, Rangers, Air Force pilots, Special Tactics operators, Marine Raiders, and on and on. He also has extensive leadership in the civilian realm. That said, his leadership expertise is hard to match.

I appreciate the Admiral’s honesty that leadership is not easy. But he also states plainly that it is not complicated. His simple principles, explained with stories from his incredible career (like standing with the Navy SEALs as they left for Operation Neptune’s Spear where they captured and killed Osama bin Laden in 2011) have stuck with me. Honest statements such as, “the only easy day was yesterday,” and “he who dares, wins” remind me of the hard truths of leadership and growth. Stamina, strength and excellence can only be built by forging ahead anew each day.

Throughout the book, Admiral McRaven walks through 18 short and readable chapters with a key principle noted in each, such as “no plan survives first contact with the enemy.” He shares stories and honest truths that can be applied by any reader. I can see why he was so successful—he speaks the hard truth, but in such a way that it inspires and empowers.

This is an easy read with much practical application. I would highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to be a good leader.
